The 7th and 8th grade football team brought home the first win in Middle School history by defeating the Wildcats of Gallatin County 14-6. SCMS struck first on offense when Mikey Gatto found Kyle Whitham for a quick pass over the middle that he turned into a 55 yard touchdown. Austin South would run through the left side of the line to put the Pacers out in front 8-0. Stout defense by the middle school players in the first two quarters, yielded only 6 points to the athletic runners of Gallatin County and the Pacers took an 8-6 lead into the half. In the third quarter Mikey Gatto was able to scramble and rip off a big scoring run of 45 yards to put the Pacers up 14-6. The second half saw more sound defensive plays by the Pacers as they shut down the Wildcat offense repeatedly even stopping one threatening drive in the fourth quarter with a timely interception in the redzone by Austin South. Gallatin County refused to go away, though, and drove deep into Pacer territory before the boys rallied to push them back and seal the victory on a sack by the defensive line as time expired. What an unbelievable night and atmosphere made better by all of the members of Pacer Nation that made the trip over the river to root on our team in their last contest of the season. The boys fought so hard and were able to overcome their mistakes to bring home a historic win. Thanks again to everyone who has had a hand in helping us promote, create, and nurture the players and program over the last 8 months. I only wish you all were able to be on the field when the final horn sounded to see the look in their eyes and hear the roar that bellowed from the crowd. This was an experience I know they will never forget and, with more hard off-season work, will be repeated time and again next season.
