The Agricultural Development Corporation unveiled a new maize seed variety. The seed was unveiled by Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Hon. Felix Kiptarus Koskei and the ADC Ag. Managing Director, Dr. Andrew Tuimur at the ADC Namandala farm. The new seed; KH600-23A Hybrid is resistant to diseases such as rust, leaf blight and grey leaf spot, reduces lodging both root and stalk and out yields other popular varieties by 43.3% and has characteristics similar to those of hybrid 614 variety. It has agronomic recommendations of upper altitude of 1800-2500 M.A.S.L with rainfall of 1000-2000 mm per annum. The variety is suitable for growing in high altitude areas such as Trans Nzoia, Mt.Elgon Slopes, West Pokot, Uasin Gishu, South and North Rift Region, Cetral Kenya, Baringo, Trans Mara, Kisii and Nyamira Counties, among other. The White semi flint grain which takes 140-175 days (5 months) to mature with a Yield range of 9.5 to 15.1 ton/ha (43 to 68 bags/acre), was developed through three years of research and is already in the market. ADC will play the role of availing sufficient quantities and quality seed to the Kenyan farmer and facilitate the multiplication of the seed, endeavoring to make sure the seed produced is of highest quality possible, and in so doing, will contribute towards poverty reduction efforts and to the national food security policy.
