The Alien Tort Act provides federal jurisdiction for any civil action by an alien for a tort only, committed in violation of the law of nations or a treaty ratified by the United States. Causes of action arise under international law and corresponding treaties, expressed in the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child, the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of discrimination against women, the American Convention on Inter-American Human Rights, the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Welfare of the Child . Causes of action include: 1. Torture, 2. Crimes against Humanity, 3. Cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment, 3. Violation of due process, equal protection under the law, 4. Deprivation of constitutional rights, 5. Civil conspiracy, 6. Malicious prosecution, 7. Abuse of process, 8. Intentional misrepresentation, 9. Negligence, 10. Intentional infliction of emotional stress.
