The American Shakespeare Centers just-opened production of Macbeth - TopicsExpress

The American Shakespeare Centers just-opened production of Macbeth is so good, I felt like I needed a cigarette after the show -- and I dont even smoke. James Keegan is the unspeakable Scottish tyrant, and Sarah Fallon is the notorious Lady M. Theyre both terrific, as youd expect, but the real showstoppers here are the three Weird Sisters, played (in a nifty bit of cross-gender casting) by the very muscular, very masculine Gregory Jon Phelps, Patrick Midgley, and Jonathan Holtzman. Holtzman also plays Macduff, and the climactic fight between Mr. Keegans Macbeth and Mr. Holtzmans Macduff is as brutal and desperate as stage violence gets. Director Jim Warren manages to give each Blackfriars iteration of Macbeth a new twist: In this one, he places special emphasis on the musical numbers, and includes a scene with Hecate (Chris Johnston) that Thomas Middleton probably wrote for a completely different play. Most productions of Macbeth drop the scene, but this one makes a good case for keeping it. For more info or for tickets, visit americanshakespearecenter.
