Durham family gathered in the living room watching Andy Griffith legs propped up warm under a heavy brown throw the quiet sounds of night surround me lulling me under night’s spell drowsy eyes close and open mouths stretch wide in sleep’s sweet song little laughs erupt comments and questions by inquiring minds the steady creaking of a rocking chair slowly beckons the night’s next hour a single click and silence comes electronic sounds replaced by protests little voices grump and groan as little feet patter off to ready themselves for bed a story, prayers, and thanks for the day eyes closed, heads bowed lamps go out and nightlights twinkle whispered I love yous sleepy heads nod off to dreamland the day at last is done
