The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day: When Sam Houston met with native American representatives to sign a peace and commerce treaty at Birds Fort (near present day Euless), he wore a purple velvet suit embroidered with the heads of foxes and silver spurs, a Bowie knife on his belt, and an Indian blanked thrown over his shoulders. He was successful in negotiating the treaty with representatives of the Delaware, Chickasaw, Waco, Tawakoni, Kichai, Caddo, Anadarko, Ioni, Biloxi, and Cherokee tribes. The pact was signed on September 29, 1843.
