The Asia Canine Protection Alliance (ACPA) is an international alliance of animal protection organisations committed to improving the welfare of dogs in the region by ending the illegal trade in dogs for human consumption- a trade which represents both a severe and prevalent animal welfare concern in the region, and a risk to human health by facilitating the transmission of rabies and other diseases. All these countries have signed the ASEAN group of nation’s commitment to eliminate rabies by the year 2020. The cross border trade in unvaccinated dogs is severely compromising this agreement. ACPA’s focus is to end the illegal trade of dogs from Thailand and Laos into Vietnam. A conference in August 2013 in Hanoi, Vietnam will bring alliance members together with governmental and other authorities to work toward solutions.
