The Australian Asylum Seeker Crises Game, (designed by me) - TopicsExpress

The Australian Asylum Seeker Crises Game, (designed by me) inspired by John Hunter’s ‘The World Peace Game’, is a hands-on political and social simulation that gives the students the opportunity to explore the policies and issues surrounding Australia’s Asylum seeker debates. The game allows students to understand how do our national concerns regarding asylum seekers and our solutions fit with the bigger picture of what is happening around the world. The students are given: A case study of a real life asylum seeker A history of the that country What is happening in their neighboring countries The closest Australian embassy Treaties signed by Australia (The 1951 Refugee Convention) UNHCR (convention on the right of children) Definition of Refuge by United Nations Graphs and tables on the number of boat arrives in Australia Number of illegal immigrants, and those who are over staying their visas in Australia Australia’s economy and unemployment rate, and what it rates globally The fears Australian public have about asylum seekers The reasons and how government justify their boarder protection policies And eventually students have to process this Asylum seeker, and decide his/her fate, as whether to send them back, welcome them to Australia, or (?)… The game definitely has room for improvement and can be a lot bigger and greater than it is right now, but it is a great way to stimulate discussions around these issues while providing the big picture. It comes down to individual students to decide which aspect to focus on and make prioritisations, keeping in mind how others could be affected. Being a global citizen requires one to be an active ‘local citizen’. The game encourages students to critically reflect upon Australia’s socio-economic and political concerns surrounding the asylum seekers debate while taking into consideration the global ramification.
