The Australian Society of Authors announces the 2013 mentorship program for unpublished writers and book illustrators Applications for the Australian Society of Authors (ASA) mentorship program for emerging writers and book illustrators will be accepted from Monday 7 October 2013. This popular program provides twelve successful applicants with the opportunity to develop a work-in-progress under the guidance of an author, illustrator or editor. Working closely for a year with a mentor will help applicants bring their works to a publishable standard. An additional five highly commended applicants will receive a two-hour consultation with an author of their choice, plus admission to two ASA Professional Development programs. These awards aim to assist promising applicants in developing their writing skills and encouraging them to pursue their works. Funded by Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund, the mentorship program has supported the development of many writers who have built literary careers. Previous recipients include Georgia Blain, Karen Blair, Michelle Dicinoski, Jane Jervis-Read, Favel Parrett and Edwina Shaw. Lucy Treloar, mentorship recipient in 2011, won the Writing Australia Unpublished Manuscript Award in 2012. Unpublished writers and illustrators wishing to apply for a mentorship should visit https://asauthors.org/emerging-writers-and-illustrators-mentorships to download the Eligibility Criteria and Submission Guidelines. They should also read the Frequently Asked Questions before they prepare their application. Applications close 1 November 2013, with the results announced in December 2013.
