And when the principal guest, former President Fidel V. Ramos, walked out of a Marco Polo Hotel room — which was locked for nearly an hour — he was seen grinning widely. And he said: “The best is soon to come…” Walking next to the former president was his host, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte who himself was smiling. Beside Duterte were the other personalities who was with him and Ramos in the meeting — former Presidential Assistant for Mindanao Paul Dominguez and former chairperson of the government peace panel, lawyer Jesus Dureza. Ramos was evasive, and at the same time, sounded a little arcane, when he was cornered by the media. “They asked me ‘who are you voting in 2016’? My answer was ‘2016? 2016 is too confused. I‘m in 2022. I am still around. I don’t know about you,” he said. When prodded, he said: “I was asked if it is about time for someone from Mindanao to become president. Yes, I tried during my time. I was spending more time here in Mindanao, hoping that Mindanao will take me as Mindanawon. But I was not.” Dureza and Dominguez also stayed silent in the background. Duterte said the issue of presidency was never discussed during the meeting. “We never talked about it,” he told the media. “We discussed about BIMP-Eaga.”
