The BLM has commissioned a new National Academy of Sciences (NAS) panel to review research proposals for STERILIZATION or contraception of wild horses and burros, despite the recommendation of the previous NAS panel AGAINST spaying mares and surgically or chemically castrating stallions. And, even before the new panel makes recommendations, the BLM Oregon has offered a $50,000 grant for Functional Assessment of Ovariectomy (Spaying) via Colpotomy of Wild Mares. As it spends millions more tax dollars for research into sterilizing horses, the BLM continues to vastly under-utilize the readily available, safe and cost-effective PZP fertility control vaccine.
