The Battle of Second Kernstown from the Valley 1864 has a lot in common with the battles at Front Royal and Winchester from Stonewall Jacksons 1862 campaign, dont you think? In both instances, large forces were withdrawn from the Shenandoah to bolster a large army in the vicinity of Richmond. In both cases, the local Confederate commander took advantage of the situation and struck at his recently weakened enemies. The main difference is that in 1862, Jackson had specific orders to threaten, but not to cross the Potomac. In 1864, Early did not. The U.S. Army did not make this particular mistake a third time...
