The Bhutan Biogas Programme (BBP) is a joint programme of Asian Development Bank (ADB), Department of Renewable Energy (DRE), Department of Livestock (DoL), SNV Netherlands Development Organisation and Bhutan Development Bank Ltd. (BDBL). The project has a strong focus on capacity building in the public and private sectors to construct and operate 1,600 biogas plants during the period March 2011 to February 2014 directly benefiting about 10,000 people. This pilot project is intended to establish the capacity to enable the country to run a large scale biogas programme in the subsequent phase. The overall objective of BBP is to contribute to the national aim of poverty reduction by improving the livelihoods and quality of life of rural families, particularly the lives of women by reducing their work load; by reducing impacts of biomass resource depletion; and by supporting national goals of livestock development.
