The Billboard Pop Charts had a new Number One song on January 17th, 1976 ... Barry Manilow ... I Write The Songs. Written by Bruce Johnston in 1975, and first recorded by The Captain & Tennille for their 1975 album Love Will Keep Us Together. The first single release of the song was by David Cassidy, which reached #11 on the UK pop charts, but never cracked the Hot 100 in the U. S.. Barry Manilows version was produced by Ron Dante & Manilow. It debuted at #48 on the Hot 100 the week of November 15th, 1975 ... became the Number One in the country today in 1976, and remained there for one week. I Write The Songs lasted on the Hot 100 for five months, and sold a million copies.
