The Bunyip - Friday 17 April 1896 HAMLEY BRIDGE, April 15. Chiefly through the energy of Mr. J. T. Quinn, who received the support of a few townspeople in the shape of liberal subscriptions, a new Protestant cemetery, is to be established here, distant about half a mile from the township, the spot selected, a very nice and convenient one was purchased from the South Australian Company who very liberally bore expense of surveying. It is to be vested in the District Council subject to certain provisions. Steps are being taken to form a Chess Club and as we have several veteran chess players who promise their support there is little doubt of the movement being a success the result being, perhaps, the production of some champions to vie with your skilled players. Farmers are very busy and express great satisfaction at recent seasonable rains, 1*170 has been registered since the 6th inst.
