The CAMTC renewal needs our help. Below I have copied a template that can be copied and pasted into an email - please be sure to personalize the document. Some aspects of the latest version of the CAMTC can limit the opportunities of sole proprietors in the future. If you want to help the AMTA with this action heres what to do... Copy and past the following information into an email...and again, please remember to fill in your information: Dear Senator De León, Assembly Bill 1147, the Massage Therapy Title Act, is awaiting a hearing in the Senate Appropriations Committee. While AB 1147 on the right track, without amendments, it may harm professional massage therapists. Four revisions to AB 1147 would make a world of difference: 1. Add protections for CAMTC certified sole providers, so local ordinances can not require expensive establishment fees, Conditional Use Permits (CUPs) or limit the number of massage establishments in a jurisdiction. Many legitimate Massage Therapists are sole providers and AB 1147 allows city ordinances to shut down our locations, zone us out of certain parts of town, restrict the number of establishments per city, or impose Conditional Use Permits thereby eliminating our small businesses 2. Add a clause so local code can not include a requirement for additional restrooms, showers, and other facilities for sole providers. This tactic by cities has prevented legitimate therapists from being able to practice near their client base. While an establishment or spa will be better able to comply with local ordinances, individual practitioners often have one space with no access to showers or extra bathrooms. 3. Allow sole providers to lock our outside doors while we are working. Since the massage therapist/practitioner and client are the only ones in the space, it is unsafe for both to leave an unlocked door that anyone can walk into while we are in session. 4. A three year sunset period for the Massage Therapy Act, (instead of two years) This next versions of statewide massage regulation (with the new changes) deserves an evaluation period more extensive than two years.
