The Caldwell Men’s Chorus, under the direction of Mr. Keith - TopicsExpress

The Caldwell Men’s Chorus, under the direction of Mr. Keith Smith, will present its Fall Concert at First Presbyterian Church in Lenoir on Saturday, November 16th at 8:00 PM. The concert is free and open to the public. Special guests will be the Appalachian State Men’s Glee Club from Boone, under the direction of Mr. Keith McCutchen. The two choruses will sing separately, and will then combine for three pieces written by Dr. William Harbinson, who will conduct his three compositions. The three pieces quote excerpts of speeches by three famous men from history: Abraham Lincoln (“We are Not Enemies”) from his First Inaugural Address in 1861; Martin Luther King (“We Must All Learn”) from speeches given at Western Michigan University and Oberlin College in 1963 and 1965 respectively; and John F. Kennedy (“What Kind of Peace?”) from his commencement address at American University in 1963. Keith Smith, now in his 8th year as Director of the Caldwell Men’s Chorus says, “We are excited about our connection with Appalachian State University and their fine music program. Many of our members have ties to Appalachian, went to school there, sang in Men’s Glee Club or other musical groups, etc. Dr. Philip Paul was a long time conductor of both the Appalachian State Men’s Glee Club and the Caldwell Men’s Chorus; Keith McCutchen is a fine man and musician and Dr. Harbinson, who is on the music faculty at ASU, is a very prolific composer. We are honored that he will come and direct us in his three pieces. And we get the opportunity to go to Boone and sing with the Men’s Glee Club up there in the spring.” The Caldwell Men’s Chorus is made up of some 27 volunteer male singers from the Unifour area, ranging in age from 16 – 80. “We have many very diverse walks of life and musical backgrounds as individual members,” says Smith. “We have several school choral directors, active and retired, several ministers of music at churches, active and retired. We have soloists, leaders and followers. The common thread is that we all love to sing and have a passion for it. I am proud of our singers. They continue to steadily grow in musicality, artistry and professionalism. The members of the Caldwell Men’s Chorus include: Steve Austin, Beverly Beal, Tim Boone, Jerry Brooks, Richard Cary, Brian Clark, William Claude Cogdell, Bill Connor, Mark Cook, Bradley Davis, Matthew Davis, Tom Davis, Jonathan Duncan, Charlie Eaker, Sherrill German, Lui Greene, Reggy Greene, Philip Haas, Darrell Lloyd, Robert Marshall, Allen Norrod, Doug Saunders, Lonnie Newell Shull, Curtis Sides, Steve Strange, Rankin Whittington and Tim Widener. Anyone who can sing 4 part harmony and who loves to sing is encouraged to come join us. We are always looking for younger singers, to help keep traditional music alive. And we have as fine an accompanist as anyone could desire in Mr. Greg Knight from Morganton, (originally from Caldwell County). His assistant is one of our most faithful members and biggest fans, Mrs. Sandra Whittington.” The Appalachian State Men’s Glee Club will sing “Deep Peace” by Telfar, “O Magnum Mysterium” by Jakob Handl, “Imitatione Del Venetiano” by Vecchi, “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” Glee Club ’13, and “S’vion (from Three Hanukkah Songs)”, arranged by Baker.
