The California Student Aid Commission, which administers - TopicsExpress

The California Student Aid Commission, which administers state-funded grants and scholarships, did not issue a press release about the program before the deadline because “we didn’t know the specifics in terms of eligibility” until this summer, says Diana Fuentes-Michel, the commission’s executive director. [...] the Middle Class Scholarship award “is determined after you are awarded any federal Pell Grant, Cal Grant and institutional need-based grants for which you are eligible,” the commission says on its website. Students will be ineligible for the scholarship if they are receiving “need-based financial aid packages totaling at least 40 percent of their tuition from other resources,” it said in a press release. To qualify for the new scholarship, a student had to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (or a California Dream Act application for students without a Social Security number) by March 2. Disha Banik, a junior majoring in political science at UC Berkeley, filed the aid application this year and will receive a $1,000 scholarship, pending final verification of forms. Banik says her family income was around $100,000 last year. Because she is interested in politics, she knew the scholarship program was in the works. #SF #News #49ers
