The California condor population, which historically ranged from British Columbia to Baja California, was reduced to a mere 22 birds in 1981 due to hunting, accidental lead poisoning, and the pesticide DDT. Since then, captive breeding and reintroduction efforts have brought it back from the brink. Most recently, our Wildlife Without Borders-Mexico Program participated in the transfer of two female California condors to Mexico to launch a captive breeding program at the Chapultepec Zoo.
