The Cameron Gallery The Gallery was designed by the Scottish Architect Charles Cameron for Catherine the Great. It is one of the chief attractions of the Great Catherine Palace - just up Palace Street from the Alexander Palace. The large bronze statue is a copy of the Farnese Herculas. It was looted by the Nazis and returned after WWII from a foundry in Halle where it was about to be melted down. This pavillion was a great favorite of Catherines and she visited it nearly everyday when she was in Tsarskoe Selo. As she got older she had trouble with this staircase and a ramp was installed. Catherine had the Gallery decorated with busts of gods, philosophers and great men of the time. After the French Revolution broke out she tossed the bust of Voltaire over the side, believing him to be partially responsible.
