The Catholic Church has no records about the burial of nearly 800 children at a mother and baby home. Most of the children died of sickness or malnutrition. Until the 1990s, unmarried Irish women were incarcerated in state-funded, church-run institutions called mother and baby homes or Magdalene asylums, where they worked to atone for their sins.
