The Center for Constitutional Rights, along with the Chicago civil rights law firm of Loevy & Loevy, filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the University of Illinois last night on behalf of Professor Steven Salaita. We’re seeking records, including email correspondence to and from administrators and trustees surrounding his firing over personal tweets criticizing Israel’s assault on Gaza this summer. The University initially denied our FOIA request as “unduly burdensome,” and even though we substantially narrowed it to now only seek emails regarding Prof. Salaita from 15 University officials for a three-month period, the University continues to stonewall, refusing to comply with the FOIA law and produce the documents. Although the University has released some information, including email from high-level donors demanding he be fired, it’s refusing to reveal the full story behind its decision to fire Professor Salaita from a tenured position. Given the tremendous public and media interest in records on this critical First Amendment and academic freedom issue, we have been forced to sue the University for the records.
