The Chinese KD7 class 2-8-0s were an American design supplied to China by UNRRA after World War II, with 160 built by ALCO, Baldwin and Lima in 1946-47. The KD7 was a thoroughly modern engine and was highly regarded by the Chinese, with many of their features adopted as standard for new construction and the improvement of existing steam locomotives in China. The KD7 class were used on main line freight service around Shanghai and Guangzhou and remained in those areas all of their working lives. At least four KD7s are thought to be preserved: KD7 534 is at Beijing Railway Museum, KD7 587 and 641 (seen here) at Shanghais History and Railway Museums respectively, and KD7 513 at the Datong Locomotive Works Museum. A fifth loco, KD7 511, is reported to be under restoration in Hangzhou. Thanks Andy. -Phil
