The City Council is currently holding budget meetings. I remain hopeful that the current council will embrace fiscal conservatism. Maumelle has a lot of needs - streets and infrastructure being top priority. Those of you stuck on Maumelle Blvd. this morning understand this. Instead of practicing fiscal conservatism with our Strategic Plan in mind, City Hall is beholden to a fire department with an insatiable appetite for your tax dollars despite the fact Maumelle had 12 structural fires in 2013 -- (0.8% of calls). When considering the priorities of our city ask yourself: Do we really need 7 new firemen in 18 months for a city that isnt growing? Dont be suckered by union propaganda. Your homes are well protected in the event of an actual fire (seldom as they occur). Our FD has always provided a great service, but their ambition to expand is out of control - particularly given our flat revenues. Maumelle has a robust force with well trained personnel, volunteers, and mutual aid agreements with NLR and other responders. The Maumelle I represent thinks about all priorities -- not favors for unions who pay political patronage. I will continue to do what I can to speak for fiscal conservatism and the need to makes roads and infrastructure a higher priority. You can do your part by contacting your Alderman or City Hall.
