The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has advised that the redevelopment works on the #NewZealand memorial have uncovered some unexploded First World War ammunition. The site will be temporarily closed until the Belgian Army’s bomb disposal technicians have dealt with this and given it the all-clear. We apologise for any inconvenience caused. For more information on the re-opening of the site, please check the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s website cwgc.org and the webpage on the New Zealand memorial. Did you know - finding unexploded ordnance from the First World War is a sad fact of life in the communities of Western Belgium. More than 200 tonnes of ammunition is still being uncovered every year in what is known as the “Iron Harvest”. For more information about it and its effect on the local communities, check out this article published last year by UK newspaper the Telegraph.
