The Cowboy’s World by: Thomas L. Testerman The wide blue of the sky streaked with clouds pure white The hawks soaring dance, freedom defined by his flight Storm skies grey, the cleansing rain, lightning streaks The pound of thunder across plains and peaks The touch of the wind, the suns warm embrace The smell of earth and grass as the rain wets your face The sound of the wind as it sighs in the trees The cry of the eagle, the soft buzz of bees A coyote’s howl, as you sit by the fire The haunting chills as an owl inquires This is the world a cowboy sees and hears A beauty that brings the strongest nigh on to tears The lowing of cattle as they line out to the trail Heat, cold, choking dust, the cowhand’s travail From can-see till can’t-see you’re pushin’ hard The night herd’s song fit to break your heart The creak of the saddle, the swish of the rope The beat of a trot, the roll of a lope The sound of a boot heel on a floor of wood and jingle of spurs speak of your world A cowboy’s world has simple rules The rules defined in the tools they use you always speak softly, not to spook the cattle Brook no fools or flatlanders prattle Welcome a stranger up to your fire Grain your horse, he’ll take longer to tire Never mount another man’s horse A never shake out a loop on a new rope, of course The typical steer ain’t got no sense So never chase a steer toward a fence Always check your cinch before you mount When it comes to cattle, never use another man’s count Your world is simple, for the most part But this simplicity is what sets you apart The outdoors, beautiful and hard, are where you work Freedom to ponder and wander, workplace perks A good horse, a good saddle and a good rope Good chow, a fair foreman and a touch of hope Clear skies, good grass and room to roam The cowboy’s workplace, your world, your home
