The Da Nang People’s Council will discuss and adopt a resolution protesting China’s illegal placement of the Haiyang Shiyou-981 oil rig as a violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty. Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, Chairman of the city’s Fatherland Front, said on the opening day of the session that like their brethren elsewhere in the country, voters in Da Nang City do not accept China’s East Sea transgressions, including illegal placement of the oil rig and mobilization of a large number of ships, including military ships and aircraft in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf. These actions were also a violation of international laws, he said. Furthermore, Chinese aggression has damaged many Vietnamese law enforcement vessels and sunk fishing boat DNa 90152 that belongs to resident of the city’s Thanh Khe district. The boat was operating legally in Vietnamese waters when it was rammed and sunk by Chinese vessels. Mr. Hung said the city’s voters have raised their voices against China’s serious violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty over its sea and islands, including Da Nang’s Paracel Islands district. He said the voters have also expressed agreement with the political and diplomatic measures initiated by the Party and the State as well as the actions taken in the East Sea, demanding the China withdraw its drilling rig and ships from Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone, and refrain from further illegal and hegemonic actions in the East Sea. The city legislature’s mid-year session seeks to assess its socio-economic situation, review security and national defence, and discuss tasks for the second half of the year./.
