The Death of Jesus Shadows fell at even tide, The meal - TopicsExpress

The Death of Jesus Shadows fell at even tide, The meal prepared with bread and “wine.” An upper chamber, flickering lights A dozen souls and one with blight Upon his heart where darkness reigns No kindness there, no will to change Assembled now with all the rest To honor God at His behest For love once shown in days of yore When blood was splattered on the door Of houses spared when angel passed Above the ones whose die was cast To find a freedom longed so grand And journey t’ward a promised land. Where milk and honey peace and joy Would be their portion evermore. But on this night another Lamb Would give himself to fill God’s plan Across the Kidron he would tread The brook by blood stained crimson red From sacrifices slain that day A substitute for sin to pay. To olive grove in peace to be The Garden of Gethsemane. To pray alone with Father near The sounds of silence ringing clear The chords of love and strains of woe For to a cross he soon would go But now in earnest prayer he weeps With tears of blood pooled at his feet Oh Father if there be a way To save the world for this I pray Without the death of thine own Son But not MY will but thine be done And so three times the prayer was given With silence from the realms of heaven While weary eyes of friends did sleep The Lord alone his vigil keeps Then through the darkness of the night There pierced a shaft of lantern light Upon the scene of plaintive prayer The sound of soldiers tramping there Betraying smirk of harsh disgrace The Kiss affixed upon His face Then to a bloody scourging go A purple robe, a mocking show A trial conjured, no justice shown A reed in hand, a crown of thorns. Disciples speed their steps t’ward home The King of kings stands all alone. So in the sadness of the morn A mangled man with body torn Defenseless stands amidst the cries His blood on us will be our prize! As One who like a lamb is brought For slaughter, he their sins to blot No selfish wish, for them he’ll die Their howls, their shrieks, “Crucify!” So bearing cross he leads the hoard Away to die, though he is Lord Up Calvary’s hill he makes his way God’s only Son on cruel display But ere he climbs the rocky road He stumbles, falls beneath the load The cross too heavy, shoulders torn His heart is melted, strength all gone. And so at last by other hands The weight is borne, and Jesus stands Awaiting death that all did fear The cross prepared, the end is near Then on the wood with hardened nail A hammer rings the powers of Hell And so the Lamb is hoisted high Into a dark and blackened sky Two evil thieves on either side Barabbas free, Christ crucified! As daylight fades and blackness reigns The Father’s face turns from the shame The Prince of Darkness has his hour Now Sharon’s Rose a trampled flower So dying there the moments trace Such pain and torture on His face One thief repents and seeks God’s love While others mock the Heavenly Dove So as the bleeding hands of time Drip life away from Man sublime His body racked with searing pain His Crown cast down the world to gain! It’s finished now, his head bows low In whom was Life from life now flows. Though frame so shattered and body curled With arms outstretched He hugs the world! From top to floor the veil is torn And so provided by our Lord An access to a holy place Where eyes of faith can see God’s face Where Jesus his own blood will bear At one with God, atonement there! So evening shadows mark the end With tomb now borrowed from a friend The women come with fragrant care The body wrapped, their lips in prayer With broken hearts, and hope all gone The women trace their steps toward home. Their patience now the hours test As longing wells within their breast To brave again their sorrow bane To weep again amidst their pain And try at last to comprehend Why One so dear, with death doeth end. So Sabbath ends the hour comes, To leave before the rising sun In silent darkness feet declare The sorrow felt, their deep despair But as they come unto the place Where once with tear stained eyes they traced The fading outline of a tomb With door sealed shut, eternal gloom Now gone the stone, all rolled away No hint of where the body lay With minds confused and hearts dismayed A different scene, is now displayed. Upon the stone an angel there With words of wonder, news to share Your Lord is gone, he is not hear His body raised, the messages clear Sin’s power once its might to show No longer faith shall overthrow Death’s power stripped just as he said. Why seek the living with the dead! JMC
