The Deliverance Prayers We Need Now Today being the last weekend of the month, a large number of churches will congregate for their monthly night prayer vigils. A high proportion of the time will be devoted to various types of deliverance prayers. We need a lot of those now. My grouse is that most of the prayer points will be off-course. We have a problem requiring more urgent attention at hand. A personally delivered Christian in a country under National Oppression is still an oppressed Christian. You may ask our brethren in Iraq, or ask our brethren in Borno State. It is no wonder that God asked the Israelites to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. And not only Jerusalem, God sent a message to them through Jeremiah to pray for the peace of the land where He has caused them to be carried away captive, if they want to have peace [Ps 122.6, Jer 29.7] Consider this shocking news from Gwoza, according to Rev Fr. Gideon Obasogie: “The whole town and the parish rectory have been occupied by the terrorists; so many structures and items have been vandalised. Dozens killed and a lot of church structures have been burnt down.” “Christians in the town are really in a terrible situation; a moment of great persecution. “Christian men are caught and beheaded; the women are forced to become Muslims and are taken as wives to the terrorists. The houses of Christians that have fled are now occupied by the insurgents. “Their cars are used by the terrorists. Some Muslims around identify Christian homes to be occupied and the Christians in hiding were also identified and killed. Strict Sharia Law has been promulgated, as observed by a woman who luckily escaped the death zone.” This is the kind of message that made Nehemiah to lose his appetite in Babylon: “And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire. And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven…”[Neh 1: 3-4] Those brethren do not need to attend any vigil tonight…they no longer have a have a place to lay their heads in the first place! It is far away? Do not delude yourselves in the comfort of your homes today, thinking that the crisis is somewhere far in the North of Nigeria, of in very far away Iraq. God established a principle when the Promised Land was to be allotted after crossing Jordan. The tribes that God their inheritance on the side of Jordan which no longer required any contention where not allowed to settle, but rather, “the LORD commanded [them], saying, ‘The LORD your God gives you rest and will give you this land.’ “Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle shall remain in the land which Moses gave you beyond the Jordan, but you shall cross before your brothers in battle array, all your valiant warriors, and shall help them, until the LORD gives your brothers rest, as He gives you, and they also possess the land which the LORD your God is giving them. Then you shall return to your own land, and possess that which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise” Joshua 1:14-15. Do not think this crisis does not concern you. In fact, it is your responsibility, today, to fight on your knees on behalf of your brethren, and for the honour and glory of your God. Would you pray tonight?
