The Department of Epi/Bio has invited Dr. John Davies-Cole to speak on Chikungunya: The New Epidemic in the Western Hemisphere When: September 26, 2014 (TODAY) Time:: 12noon-1:00PM (SOON) Where: 5th floor conference room-Milken Institute School of Public Health. Bio for Dr. John Davies-Cole: Dr. John Davies-Cole is the State Epidemiologist at the District of Columbia Department of Health where he administers a comprehensive epidemiology program. He is also an Adjunct Faculty at the Department of Global Health, Milken Institute School of Public Health, George Washington University. He has extensive experience in epidemiology, disease control and research. He leads a team of epidemiologists that are responsible for conducting surveillance and investigations of diseases and outbreaks in the District of Columbia. He is currently leading surveillance efforts for emerging and reemerging infectious diseases in the District of Columbia that includes the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) Coronavirus and the newly emerging Chikungunya and Ebola viruses. He was a member of the regional team that developed the first syndromic surveillance system for the Washington DC Metro area in 2001, to detect events of bioterrorism. In the early 1980s, he was a World Health Organization Fellow and was involved in control of onchocerciasis (river blindness) in Burkina Faso, Mali and the Ivory Coast. He was later involved in research and control of trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) in Kenya If your schedule permits, please make plans to attend.
