The Economy is built on the sands of unpaid womens work. Well - TopicsExpress

The Economy is built on the sands of unpaid womens work. Well worth reading this article from the Herald in Ireland that seems to really get it, talking about unpaid care at home - and low pay of women working in childcare. On February 17th childcare workers are taking to the streets of Dublin to protest. Victoria White says: Understand once and for all that the care of young children is a vital service, whether at home or at crèche. It needs to be paid for through taxation. If that doesnt happen the gender pay gap will continue to yawn and children will suffer. Meanwhile, women will continue to fight their way out of poverty by crushing other women further into it. MAHM says: Income Splitting for families with care responsibilities, allowances for children, or a full transferable tax allowance between parents would help. Many countries have a fairer family taxation system but we lag behind. Re paid childcare, if more taxpayers money is to be diverted into childcare provision, in order to pay childcare workers fairly, then its even more important that the costs of caring at home (giving up one much-needed income to do so) are also properly recognised to achieve parity and a level playing field and fair choice for all. Women deserve better for the work they do - is this really acceptable in 2015? And why arent female politicians fighting to get this right for other women? herald.ie/opinion/victoria-white-low-wages-for-childcare-are-shameful-30905773.html
