The Edgertons group on this Panama Canal trip hit Puerto Vallerta - TopicsExpress

The Edgertons group on this Panama Canal trip hit Puerto Vallerta a couple days ago. In the early 1960s that was just a sleepy fishing village. We saw the set of the movie Night of the Iguana with Richard Burton and Ava Gardner (1963). That film, directed by John Huston, led to the tremendous growth of Puerto Vallerta. There have been 2 days at sea to get to Guatemala tomorrow. Along the way, there have been tremendous lectures by a Panama Canal expert on how the Canal was built, going back to the late 1800s. I will write more about that after the trip and put up a video, as the history of it is fascinating. It will cost our ship $365,000 to go through the Canal. Now that the Panamanians have total control of the Canal, they are running it much better than we are, and when the current widening project is done, when huge container ships come through, it will cost $800,000 to $1 million per ship. Our tour manager from Edgertons, Val, is doing a great job taking care of everyone. When Val was growing up in South Bend, her Dad used to drop her off at Studebaker Golf Course at 8 in the morning and pick her up at 5 after work. She played 72 holes a day and became good enough to go pro and make the LPGA tour, but decided to focus on raising her family. I am trying to get her to get off on some of these port stops and go with me to local golf courses, where we could hustle some of the local golfers!! So far, she wont buy into my little plan, argh! Comedian Darrell Joyce had wisdom for husbands the other night on the ship. He said never talk for over a minute straight with your wife, because you are giving her material to store in her mental rolodex to bring up six months later. He also said that if she starts getting on you about something, you have to keep your answer to one word and something that has nothing to do with the question. For example, if she asks, Where have you been? Your answer should be, Yesterday! He had advice for young couples that go shopping. He said the wife will go into the changing area while the young husband waits outside. Though there is a hook in there for her purse, she will come out and give him the purse. That is because as a young husband he is attractive so she is doing this for marking purposes, to keep other women away. Now, when she comes out with a new outfit on and inevitably asks, Does this make me look fat? the answer should be....Yesterday! Regarding young people and their obsession with phones, Darrell said that if a teen is asked to do something around the house today, the answer is, I am on my phone. Darrell said when he was a kid, that would not have cut it with his mother. It would have gone like this: (Darrells mother) You need to pick up your room. (Darrell) I am on my ....BAM! (Darrells mother) Looks like you are on your back!....Lol!
