The Edmonton Police Service delivered up some vintage - TopicsExpress

The Edmonton Police Service delivered up some vintage victim-blaming today, after a third woman was attacked in (supposedly bucolic) Terwillegar Towne. Acting Det. Jerrid Maze told a news conference Thursday that women shouldn’t walk down alleys. “Alleys aren’t meant for people to walk down,” Maze said. “Those are meant for vehicles and for people to put their garbage out.” Im sorry. But thats ridiculous. We actually make public spaces more dangerous when we abandon them. I walk my dog down our neighbourhoods back lanes all the time - including at 6 AM and 8 PM, when its pitch black. I meet lots of my neighbours in the lane, and lots of other dog walkers. Thats what KEEPS it safe - the fact that were there, making it a part of our community. When women are assaulted, the answer isnt for police to tell women to hide inside.
