The Empire Strikes Back remains to be my favorite Star Wars movie - best soundtrack and the most emotionally complex of all films. The last scene however confused me as a child - what the hell was that walk out all about? It was only when I got a little older that I realized that this was a crucial turning point in the saga. Up until that moment, Vader was a flat, Force-choking, evil Sith Lord. In that moment when all his officers failed him and Admiral Pietts death sentence was certain, Vader just walked out of the deck. Why? Because he lost his son - and his family - for the second time. His grief was so overwhelming that he completely forgot to inflict his favorite punishment on his incompetent officers (in fact he does not do it again at all). This was the first instance where we see a humanized Vader, preparing us all for his conversion in Return of the Jedi.
