The Etymology of Tree by John Branswell I wish you all were there that day When the sunlight whispered free It was sometime before the Mayans About 15 hundred B.C. A group of intellectuals gathered around a fire And came up with names for you and me One was more aggressive than the others And he decided that the tall thing was a tree. Of course they didnt speak English then So Im doing the translating to make sense But it was the days of How strong are you stranger? Do you wanna be best friends? Id imagine it was scary back then When no one knew how to think or talk When there wasnt any handbook On teaching your child how to walk. So they started making up rules And they started making up names And a few generations later They came up with the Olympic Games. But how did they know that tree Is the best word to describe our air? And how do we know that freedom Is out there anywhere? Cause if I was to come up with a name for a tree It would take five minutes to write down So that if one fell alone in the forest We would all know that it made a sound. And if I was to come up with a political system Id know that my way was jaded So Id sit down with everyone Ive ever met Until our systems were all traded. And if I was to think of a way That I could be a hero Id make a movie of yesterday And be played by Robert DeNiro So remember next time youre driving And your window is rolled down And everything you believe falls alone It will always make a sound.
