The European Commission has commissioned a study on the welfare of dogs and cats involved in commercial practices in EU Member States (Specific Contract SANCO 2013/12364). The purpose of the study is to collect and analyse information on breeding, keeping and trade of dogs and cats in European Member States, and import and export to third countries. The study focuses on the economic development of the sector, functioning of the EU internal market, protection of EU consumers (both from financial damage and health risks), and welfare of dogs and cats.
