The Fernie Free Press October 20, 1899 Between 3 and 4 o’clock this (Friday) afternoon a young man named (_________) was instantly killed by falling on the large circular saw at the Fernie Saw and Planing Mill Works. The saw had just run through a log which was bigger than the saw would cut. The carriage had been ran back and the poor lad who so suddenly lost his life, together with two others, started to chop off the piece on the top of the log left by the saw. The deceased stepped in between the end of the log and the saw, a space of about four feet; he put his right foot on a small iron roller, and at the first or second swing of the axe his foot slipped from the roller and he fell back onto the big circular saw, and in an instant all was over. The saw grazed the upper part of the hip bone and then ran upwards and across towards the top of the left shoulder, going entirely through the back. It happened so quick, all was over before any of his comrades realized what had happened. The body was thrown clear over the saw. No word or cry of any kind was uttered, and when the poor lad’s mates ran to him he was dead. The deceased was known in Fernie as (__________), he having amended the name of his foster parents,(_________________), of Dobbiston, Ont., father and mother of (_______________). He came to Fernie last fall with (_______________) family and has resided with them ever since. He was a very quiet and good living young man, highly respected by all who knew him, and especially so by those for whom and with whom he had worked, and his terribly sad and sudden death has cast a gloom over the entire place. The greatest sympathy is felt for those who have been to him all that father and mother could have been. His mother died when he was about four years old, leaving a large family of little ones. (_____________), his foster father, heard of the circumstances and at once went and brought the boy home with him, and ever since then a father’s care and a mother’s love has been bestowed on the young man so suddenly taken away. One of the hardest trials in connection with the sad affair has been the sending of the awful news to those in the east who have been so much to him. His main object in coming west was to better his health, which never was of the best. Had it not been for this it is doubtful if his foster parents would have let him go so far away, and this awful, sudden end of one who has been the object of their love and care for so many years will make their grief doubly hard. The funeral will take place on Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock, from the Free Press block, to the Presbyterian church, where service will be held, thence to the cemetery.
