The Flower Man doesnt often have a rant, but look out, Im on the bloody war path tonight!!! The headline below reads - Teachers Literacy Skills FAR BELOW par!! What ON EARTH is going on within our education system??? Ive just read the APPALLING report below (that Ive copied & pasted) off the ninemsn.au website tonight which has this report on there. Many of you know how passionate I am about GOOD, PROPER education for our gorgeous kids, especially a good comprehension of basic English & literary skills, so Im left wondering why the hell our kids are being taught by sub standard TEACHERS who cant even spell themselves, let alone understand what some BASIC English words mean! (see below). Can somebody tell me how the bloody hell a University student can graduate from UNIVERSITY & become a school teacher with such limited vocabulary & appalling spelling / literary skills?? Am I missing something here???? . . . What a terribly sad indictment of our higher education system this is!!! And even WAY more scarily, what of our future generations if our current generation of teachers arent equipped with these MOST BASIC of English skills?? . . . Is this an orchestrated part of the great dumbing down of society by the powers that be (which actually WOULDNT surprise me one bit) or are we witnessing the result of an appalling lackadaisical society who couldnt careless how well our kids do when they leave school?? How the hell can this be setting them up for a bright, educated future in life if they arent equipped with the most BASIC understanding & comprehension of our wonderful English language??? I have a number of lovely friends who are teachers themselves (& who KNOW how to spell!!) & some of them are my friends here on FB . . . what do you think guys? Kerry Neilson, Id love your feedback on this . . . I know how damn passionate (& damn good!) you are as a teacher yourself hun . . . anyone else want to throw in their two bobs worth? I read below (incredulously!) that the Federal Govt will shortly release a study (how bloody ridiculous!!) that will highlight how education standards can be raised . . . Give me a break!! Get the Federal Minister for Education to ring me & Ill tell him / her whats bloody wrong! WHAT HAPPENED TO THE THREE Rs of basic schooling that I was taught at school??? It certainly did me no harm, in fact it left me with an acute ability to read, write & spell properly! . . . I left school at the age of 15 & 3 minutes without a single piece of paper & yet I STILL knew how to read, write, spell, punctuate & had a sound, basic knowledge of English comprehension & a basic understanding of verbs & nouns etc . . . English skills that serve me well to this very day . . . UNLIKE BLOODY ALGEBRA!!!!! . . . But thats another gripe for another day . . . Whilst my generation were taught THE BASICS of English in a three Rs system that worked well, its patently obvious today that the bright sparks who had to modernise teaching because the old way of teaching was outdated have stuffed it up BIG TIME . . . the chickens have come home to roost now havent they??? . . . The report below certainly vindicates my argument . . . God help our future generations of kids if this is the best they can expect . . . & the Federal AND ALL State Ministers for Education should be held accountable for this literary disgrace & sacked if our national schooling skills are not up to par & dont meet a certain educational standard!!! Someone has to be held accountable for this totally unacceptable situation, so you may as well start by getting rid of the apples at the top of the tree first until HIGHER STANDARDS ARE achieved . . . yeah & I can dream on . . . (AAP) Many would-be high school teachers reportedly have worse spelling skills than their prospective students, raising concerns within the education union. The union is seeking to have entry standards on new teachers raised after a study revealed many teachers had trouble with spelling and had a limited vocabulary, News Corp has reported. In a study of more than 200 teaching undergraduates, none were able to spell a list of 20 words correctly, with some not getting even one word right. Do you think literacy standards for new teachers are high enough? Among the more frequently misspelled words were acquaintance and parallel. The university students also had trouble with word definitions. Some believed sanguine was a type of pasta, while others defined draconian as having something to do with dragons. Australian Education Union president Angelo Gavrielatos said it was evidence standards for new teachers needed to be raised.
