The Fog of Knowledge Syndrome - Geoffery Moore There’s a Dilbert cartoon in which Dilbert, in a meeting with his boss, raises his hand and says, “Question: How do you know which management techniques work best? Logically, doesn’t the existence of thousands of management books show that no one knows what works best?” Dilbert’s boss answers, “The trick is knowing which one to read.” To which Dilbert says, “Now you’re just making me mad!” And it can be maddening. You read a few marketing books or perhaps go to a marketing seminar, and you get a lot of ideas and marketing information in your head. But then, where do you start? What should you do first? How do you convert all that information into an action plan that will work? The poet T.S. Eliot wrote, “Where is the knowledge lost in information? Where is the wisdom lost in knowledge?” He was saying something about the loss of perspective that comes from having too much information—the inability to see the forest for the trees.
