The Forgotten Delicacies of India My ever creative mother in law planted a sprouted seppankazhangu (or chaamagadda in Telugu), in our flower pot in the balcony this June. Everyday Raghu would water the plant gently. All of us, like a new born baby, would observe the growth of this plant. When the large leaves started showing up, our joy knew no bounds. This morning, my mother in law, decided to make “sepamattava vada” as it is called in Tamil (chamakura chuttalu in Telugu ) with these leaves. She ground fresh besan with green chillies, hing and ginger, smeared the paste on the leaves. Then she cut it, steamed it in idli cooker, and shallow fried on slow fire. I can’t explain to you the joy of eating home grown vegetable, that too, prepared with so much love by my mother in law. I don’t know how many of us actually know of this delicacy or have eaten them. In these days of fast food, we have forgotten the goodness of our vegetables and our home made food. To top it all, our elders are more than willing to cook such foods and serve it with great love. Let us take a moment to thank the goodness of our Indian food, and more than that, the love with which our elders cook and serve.
