The Garbage Patch State is an artistic exhibit which raises awareness about the huge islands of plastic garbage adrift in the oceans, currently some 6 million square miles wide. The Garbage Patch State consists of 750 bags of plastic bottles and caps, linked to form a gigantic display both within and outside the United Nations Secretariat building. Created by the Italian artist, Maria Cristina Finucci in 2013, the Garbage Patch debuted at UNESCO in Paris in 2013 and has travelled to Venice, Madrid and Rome. The current installation will be at the UN in New York until 19 October 2014. It is sponsored by the Italian Mission to the UN on the occasion of the Italian EU Presidency.
