The General Lighthouse Authorities of the UK and Ireland have today launched a backup navigation system called eLoran in seven ports across Britain, completing the first phase of their roll out. The new system, which is ground rather than satellite-based, is designed to be used in the event of a GPS failure, provide additional position, navigation and timing (PNT) information to ships fitted with eLoran receivers. Many critical instruments on ships use Global Navigation Satellite Systems, and if they fail the consequences could be disastrous. The seven stations, from Aberdeen to the world’s busiest sea-lane at Dover, will beam low-frequency pulses allowing vessels to continue through breaks in global positioning system transmissions caused by solar storms or jamming.
