The Giants’ reserves side, UWS Giants, consolidated their place in the top four in the NEAFL Eastern Conference and bumped the Sydney Swans from top spot with a stunning 63-point win in at the SCG on Sunday; in the curtain-raiser to the Swans v Giants clash. It was an early 9:50am start to the match, but while the Swans struggled to get themselves into gear, the Giants got the early jump and set up a match-winning lead. A high-scoring opening quarter saw the Giants burst out of the centre, pumping the ball with regularity to the forward line. A run of nine goals to three opened up a 37-point lead at the first change and ensured the Giants would never be headed. The game tightened in the second quarter, and goals were harder to get; but the UWS Giants’ defence rose magnificently to the occasion. Holding the Swans to one goal while scoring three themselves, the Giants extended their lead to 51 points at the long break. A marathon 36-minute third quarter saw both sides throw caution to the wind, and the goals were coming thick and fast. This quarter was more even, six goals apiece; and for all the Swans’ efforts, they were unable to make any dent in the deficit, with the Giants holding a 52-point advantage at three quarter time. The game was safely won, but the Giants weren’t finished yet; going on with the job in a three goals to two final quarter to give themselves a substantial percentage boost. Nathan Wilson kicked three goals in a best-on-ground performance for the Giants; while Matthew Buntine and Zac Williams were also prominent around the ground. Next week, UWS Giants have the bye. UWS Giants 21.16 (142) def Sydney Swans 12.7 (79)
