The Good News in Job Jul 09, 2013 05:01 pm, by Chris Greer Read Job 15 “Can any mortal be pure? Can anyone born of a woman be just? Look, God does not even trust the angels. Even the heavens are not absolutely pure in his sight. How much less pure is a corrupt and sinful person with a thirst for wickedness?” Job 15:14-16 NLT Do you see a part of the gospel message in these verses? Have you realized that the entire Book of God – the whole Bible from the first verse of Genesis to the last verse of Revelation – is about one thing? That one thing is the revelation of God in Jesus Christ by whom and through whom we have unobstructed access to God and a life that is whole. (Amen!) Look again at today’s verses and see if you catch it: “Can any mortal be pure?” – No. “Can anyone born of a woman be just?” – No. “Even the heavens are not absolutely pure in his sight! How much less is a corrupt and sinful person?” – Yep. At first glance this passage is a bit of a downer. But in light of the New Testament, Eliphaz’s sermon is a reminder of a wonderful truth: that we are made whole, complete, sinless, and acceptable to God only through Jesus Christ. We can’t do it on our own! We can’t be pure. We never could and never will. Nothing is completely pure and holy like God. Yet Jesus Christ – by taking our sin and paying for it with his life, then conquering sin and death forever by his resurrection – has made a way for you and I to be made whole and to know God, personally and forever. (Amen again!) Job and his friends are having a conversation that lasts for 23 chapters in the middle of the Old Testament. As you read each of them, don’t miss the saving truth of the gospel woven throughout. It’s the message of Scripture – and it’s a reminder for us today of God’s overwhelming act of salvation. Reflection: How long have you been a Christian? Five weeks – five years – five decades? Do you ever forget the truth and power of God’s grace offered to you? How can you reflect on it anew today?
