The Government has unveiled a Sh87.6 billion five- year strategic plan to enhance national security. The Interior Co-ordination ministry unveiled the plan yesterday with Sh15 billion being allocated to security surveillance and communication in a project to be implemented by Safaricom. The plan is expected to see Sh3 billion budgeted and allocated for the project annually to ensure installation of CCTV cameras in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Garissa, Eldoret, Thika, Kisii, Nyeri and Kakamega. It also proposes allocation of Sh1.1 billion to overhaul three old MI-17 Russian choppers that have been grounded and Sh18 billion for purchase of 10 helicopters in five years and Sh1 billion to hire two helicopters for four years. The Government will also build six prisons. Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku said the choppers will enhance aerial patrols and help curb crime. Several stakeholders in the security sector attended the unveiling of the blueprint at the CID Pavilion yesterday.
