The Grant County Health Department presented radon gas education to sixth grade students in Grant County schools. After the demonstration, each student received a free radon test kit to take home, set up and return in five days. Students from Union Educational Complex, Dorcas Elementary, Maysville Elementary and Petersburg Elementary competed against one another to see which sixth grade class could bring 100 percent of their test kits back. Union Educational Complex won the challenge—100 percent of the kits were returned. Students that returned their radon kits received a radon shirt. Sixth graders were also asked to submit a new design for the radon T-shirts. Megan Kite, a student from Dorcas Elementary, won the design contest with her “Radon Exterminates” theme. Sean Bennett, GCHD administrator, picked the winning design for the shirts. Shayden Daugherty, a student at UEC won first place in the state for his 2012 design, “Radon Kills.” He was honored at an award ceremony at UEC. He received a plaque and a banner will be displayed at the school with his poster design. Kayla Jenkins (Maysville Elementary) placed second and Britney Schrader (Petersburg Elementary) placed third. The above mentioned students entered their posters when they were in the sixth grade but judging does not take place until the spring of their seventh grade year. Several sixth graders submitted posters for this year’s contest and received certificates of participation. Grant County will send entries to the national poster contest again this year.
