The Hebrew’s understanding was centered totally around their view of creation and the Creative Power of God and their concept of how man became a ‘living soul’. In the Genesis story, man was: 1. Formed from the dust of the ground, 2. The breath of God was breathed into his nostrils and then 3. Man became a living soul. Well then, do we have three separate parts to the image of man or is there one image of man, the soul, in which is composed of two parts, the dust of the ground plus the breath of God? Dust of the Ground + Breath of God = The Soul of Man.
