The Horsey Stare Down In some cases, usually when horses are just fidgety, I stop, go to the front and have a talk with the horse and give the horse a long hard look, while telling them to knock it off and behave...after all, I try to make it as comfortable for them as I possibly can, by giving frequent breaks if needed, holding the legs low, etc...(yes, I do argue with them while I look them deeply into the eye, lol) They usually try to look away, often at the owner and I tell them the mom or dad wont safe them this time and ask them to look at me again, cause were talking, lol.....it generally does not take very long and the eye starts to soften.....this is when I know I have the agreement from the horse to cooperate more... I may have to do it once or twice again, but then it typically sticks :-)
