The IEU congratulates teachers and support staff in Hunter Valley Catholic systemic schools who will become the first to cast their vote to take industrial action. IEU Acting General Secretary Gloria Taylor said the Australian Electoral Commission was preparing a postal ballot for each of the 55 schools in the Maitland-Newcastle Diocese. “When this ballot is passed, members will take protected industrial action prior to the end of Term 2. “The draft agreement proposed by Catholic school employers threatens to increase hours of face-to-face teaching, scrap restrictions on class sizes, abolish all promotions positions, take away the right to a half-hour meal break and reduce sick leave. Support staff are threatened with pay cuts between $6,156 and $17,417 per annum for the same work. This is just for starters.” Local Hunter Valley Independent Education Union Organiser Therese Fitzgibbon said a strong response was expected. “Members have already voted unanimously to reject their employer’s proposed agreement, which not only attacks members’ conditions but would inevitably have a detrimental impact on our children’s education. Schools in the Diocese of Wollongong will cast their postal votes next, with other dioceses following close behind. ieu.asn.au/news-publications/news/2014/05/hunter-valley-catholic-school-staff-to-cast-first-vote-for-industrial-action/
