The Imitation Game filmmakers to be honored by Human Rights Campaign Films hero, portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, stood alone and endured unimaginable torment and shame because he was gay 23 DECEMBER 2014 | BY GREG HERNANDEZ The cast and filmmakers of The Imitation Game will be honored next month by The Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBTI civil rights organization in the US. The film tells the story of the late British cryptographer and computer scientist Alan Turing who was chemically castrated by his government for being gay and later committed suicide. This despite the fact that Turing (portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch in the film) was a hero who developed a method of cracking previously-unbreakable Nazi codes and shortened WWII. Turing was officially pardoned by the British government last year. Alan Turing was a true hero who saved countless lives with his revolutionary thinking and determination, said HRC President Chad Griffin. Yet during the most tragic part of his lifetime, he stood alone and endured unimaginable torment and shame because he was gay. This film will give millions across the globe a chance to celebrate a truly brilliant man for his groundbreaking contributions to the world. The film has grossed nearly $23 million worldwide and is expected to add to that total once Oscar nominations are announced next month. The HRC honor will be presented at the group’s New York Gala Dinner on 31 January at the Waldorf Astoria.
